A God Without Limits

It is hard for most of us to be able to fathom a God who truly knows no limits because most of our own problems in life are due to our own limitations. We are limited by space because we can only be in one place at one time. My mini-van is pretty fast but it can still only be in one place at one given time.

We are also limited in our knowledge. “The old adage is true”. The more you learn the more you know how much you don’t know. We are constantly facing questions we don’t have the answers to.

We are also facing limitations in our resources. We find our bodies in different modes of physical exhaustion, mental exhaustion and spiritual emptiness. Some of us are financially busted. We see people all around us with needs such as the “Homeless”, a co-worker who can’t pay rent or the electric bill. Because we are used to those kinds of limitations it is hard to conceive a God who isn’t bothered by limitations.

Jeremiah 23:23-24 – Am I a God at hand, saith the Lord, and not a God afar off? Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the Lord. Do not I fill heaven and earth? Saith the Lord.

Jeremiah 23:21 – I have not seen these prophets, yet they ran; I have not spoken to them, yet they prophesied. This scripture reading deals with God’s condemnation of false prophets who claim to speak in God’s name but who speak lies. We find these prophets were giving the Nation of Israel false hope, because they were speaking in God’s name comforting lies. The same thing is happening in pulpits all over America today. Apparently they thought that God didn’t see what they were doing, but God is an all-seeing, all knowing God who is everywhere. Our God is not a God that dwells in one church or one temple, but is everywhere.

God has no spacial limitations because He is not composed of physical matter. He doesn’t have size, weight, and height like we do but instead is Spirit. Because of His nature He can be everywhere.

Sometimes as Christians we forget that God is already present. We ask God to come in and fill this place. He is already here. When we sing our songs of worship, we are not asking God to be present, but to make His presence known and to help us experience His presence as we worship Him.

Omnipresence means that God is personally present in all places. This is a Latin word with “Omni” meaning “All” and “Presence” oddly enough meaning Presence”. If you are seeking God that should bring you comfort, but to people who are running from God it is a powerful warning. Paul in Romans 11:33 - depicts a picture of God’s wisdom and knowledge as being like pure gold or silver with no bottom.

People all over the land ask questions about God such as these: Why did God create Adam and Eve with the ability to sin? Why did God make a world where “Aids” exist? Why did my marriage fail? Why didn’t God heal my son? What does God’s infinite knowledge include? He knows the past. He knows every skeleton in our closet. He knows the present and the future. He knows exactly how every story is going to end.

Have you ever examined a fine piece of needlepoint? It may have a beautiful picture on the outside and you are in awe of it’s beauty, but if you were to turn it to the other side, you would see thread knots that make no sense. Think of life as being like needlepoint and God sees the finished product from the front. It makes us want to trust His plan even when it doesn’t seem to make sense from our perspective. The technical term for this is “Omniscience” which simply means that God knows all things both actual and possible. This word comes from “Omni” meaning “All” and “Science” which is the Latin word for knowledge.

There are many today who deny that God is Omniscient. There are many people today who do not believe that God knows the future. If we don’t believe that God is Omniscient we couldn’t trust His plan. Thank God, I have found the way, I can trust the wisdom of God’s plan for my life and I know God is all knowing just as the Bible says.

In reading Matthew 19:26 – we can see that God is not only unlimited in space & knowledge but also in power. We find in this passage of scripture Jesus meeting a wealthy young man, He invites him to sell his possessions and become a Christian. The man rejects the offer Jesus has made and walks away. Jesus said it is harder for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than a rich man to be made right with God. We can expect His intervention in our lives; we can anticipate divine appointments in our lives when our paths cross with someone else at the right time. This describes God’s Omnipotence.

Omnipotence simple means that God is able to do anything consistent with His character. Again we see that word “Omni” or “All” and “Potent”which is Latin for power. God is all-powerful and able to use whatever He deems necessary to accomplish His will.

We should believe the church is a place where God inspires us to believe for the impossible. If our vision is no longer God-Sized we will find that we cease to believe in God’s Omnipotence. God knows no limits, therefore you and I as part of His body, should have everything we need to become a “Spiritual Giant” at our disposal. We can be assured of God’s presence, His power and His knowledge working in our lives. This will only happen when we are completely sold out to God with all our being.
